Horas antes de los hechos, el presidente Martín Vizcarra había anunciado, en su conferencia habitual del mediodía, que había dos pacientes en estado de gravedad: uno de 78 años y otro de 96. El primero de ellos es la primera víctima fatal de la pandemia. El paciente 0, contagiado el 6 de marzo, ya se ha recuperado. Dos pacientes han sido ya dados de alta.
Elizabeth Hinostroza, ministra de Salud, insistió en RPP Noticias que la población debe manter la calma y continuar con las medidas de prevención ante el COVID-19. «Queremos hacer un llamado a la calma a la ciudadanía», dijo tras conocerse el primer fallecimiento a causa del nuevo coronavirus.
