El presidente de los Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, anunció este miércoles la suspensión de «todos los viajes desde Europa» hacia su país por 30 días. Pero su gobierno luego aclaró que el veto afecta solo a extranjeros no residentes, y que con esta dura medida, pretende contener la propagación del COVID-19 en los EE.UU.
Según los datos oficiales, hasta el momento se han confirmado 1.025 casos de coronavirus en el país norteamericano. Washington es el estado con el mayor número de pacientes. Le sigue California y Nueva York. En el país han fallecido más de 30 personas por la epidemia del COVID-19.
La decisión adoptada, viene a raíz, de que la Unión Europea no tomó las mismas precauciones como restringir los viajes desde China y otros puntos calientes, y como resultado hay numerosos nuevos focos en los EE.UU. que fueron sembrados por «viajeros de Europa». Asimismo, señaló que la medida excluye a Reino Unido y entrará en vigor a la medianoche de este viernes, y que «el comercio no se verá afectado por los 30 días de restricción de viajes desde Europa«, señaló el presidente en un tuit.
Después de las declaraciones del presidente de los EE.UU. Donald Trump, posteriormente el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, en inglés) señaló que en realidad la medida «suspende la entrada de la mayoría de extranjeros que han estado en ciertos países de Europa en algún momento en los 14 días antes de su llegada a EE.UU.».
Además, a pesar de que el presidente dijo que la restricción iba a afectar a «cualquier cosa que venga de Europa a Estados Unidos» e incluso mencionó «la enorme cantidad de comercio y carga», el propio Trump en un tuit posterior dijo que «la restricción afectaría a personas y no bienes«
